How many months??

I can't believe it's been months since I posted... I'm going to try to gather my thoughts and complete my Japan entries eventually. Unfortunately, unlike my trip before this recent one, I didn't make a customary itenary;p So it'll be all over the place based on my photos and what I can remember we did. The next set of photos show UENO ZOO! :) So It'll be that and looking at Hanami. I swear I wrote about Hanami at one point.. but who knows at this point eh?? XD Or maybe I was 'writing' in my head. Too bad there's no technology to write thoughts.. It'd be wonderful and horrible at the same time. Cause I bet they'd use it in investigation rooms or something.. o.o Could you imagine? People would have to be trained not to think thoughts!!!! o.o
I miss Japan. I want to go again around the same time next year. But I need to see my mom and stuff. So we'll see how it all goes. :) PLUS oddly enough tickets to Japan are really steep right now, for around that time. Maybe after holidays they'll go back down? Tickets to Italy are rockin.. Normally $1200, they are going for $700-$800 o.o

The trip begins

So we left off with pre-trip planning! Well of course you know we decided to go... After much debating after the smaller earthquake aftershock, we took the leap. Our planes left around 3-4 am on Tuesday April 29th prospectively. I had checked my seat assignments and every time, the digital schematic assured me I had both seats to myself on the long flight. From Tucson to Texas, it was a short fast jaunt in which my mind blanked out ( possibly napped) and I raced to my next flight. Amazingly I only had about 20 mins to get to the next plane. The airport map made the airport look like a hop-skip and a jump. Truthfully I began running and like a hallway in a nightmare, I found myself never getting any closer to my destination. I thougth I would surely miss the flight and leave J in a panic when I didn't show up at our appointed times ( mine being about 50 mins ahead in arrival). This spurred me to be more hasty. I actually managed to stop my panic long enough to ask if I was nearing my gate. Answer: not even close! I need to take the airport tram and it would be 10-12mins. Before the airport volunteer finished giving me directions, my feet began to propel me, barely letting me say a hasty " Thank you."

I did manage to make it to my flight all in a hot mess. Unfortunately the empty seat next to me.. was filled to max capacity by a rather robust gentleman, who took several minutes to disengage from his seat to allow me into my seat by the window. To his credit he was kindly and proceeded to explain he was with his church group was bringing supplies to Sendai. Unfortunately it did nothing to ease the  discomfort of the trip. I reflected that the painfully thin people in the 3 rows behind me had the row to themselves, while the two full sized folk were smashed together. I had to admit was some kind of horrible irony. This would all of been more bearable if my companion also hadn't had some strangeness to himself. One being wearing sunglasses even in the dark ( so I couldn't tell if I was waking him or not) and the other being that he drank enough to water a herd of elephants but never seem to need to use the facilities. I waited until my eyes began to water before I finally bothered him to use the facilities myself. Each time I asked he started the whole process of disengagement from the seat and I felt terribly guilty causing such inconvenience. Not to mention he always sat down during the wait and I had to watch the getting out of seat process twice for one break( and didn't get a chance to stretch because he'd start getting out of the seat as I got out of the restroom). All that aside he was a very congenial fellow who gave me his bread and salad because he disliked 'rabbit food.' And was never plaintive when I did need to use the restroom. I think I manage to par my restroom breaks for a 12-13 hours to 2-3.

The flight left me nauseous in general. I'm not going to blame it on my row mate. Could of been the close quarters, the food, motion sickness.. who knows.. I luckily did not feel it on the way back. That's another story though. I nearly skipped out of the airplane in happiness not to be trapped in my seat anymore! My flights were all booked on American Airlines. They didn't do a bad job. Their planes for long trips are equipped with personal entertainment systems on the back of every seat, that have a touch screen that requires a bit of a jab. The only complaint is probably that the movies are the same on the way there and back. I ended up watching Burlesque probably about 3 times? I love the dancing and such of it... I definitely need to see at least one real burlesque show one day, not to be confused with a two bit strip club. I want the singing and dancing and a real show!

So I waited in the common area where everyone was waiting for arrivals at. I had thought of staying near the carousels where I got my baggage but felt this would illicit questions and suspicion. After quite a bit of waiting I realized I should double check arrivals in case her plane was delayed.. and upon that I discovered that Air China was not even in my terminal but in terminal 1 with all the domestic flights! I raced to Terminal 1 by calmly ( though my insides were teeming) getting on a bus that took me to that terminal. I stood instead of sitting and was facing a bank of seats that were filled with a Japanese family. When we turned a particularly sharp corner, the baggage facing that row of seats, threaten to jump the rail, in which we all shouted in alarm. It was for nothing because the baggage were safely corralled by good design. We all giggled, even the gentleman, suddenly bonded by our near baggage stampede experience. I remember this because there need not be words exchanged to know what everyone had thought in that moment.

In Terminal 1 I wandered about and saw that J's flight arrived early. I was still before it, so I made myself comfortable to wait. After a fashion, I didn't see one foreigner come through that was blonde and blue eyed. A small trill of panic weeded itself into my stomach. I wandered back and forth to get every angle of the arrivals, which was punctuated by a large square pillar. Finally I walked over to the info desk to call J on the intercom. I saw one girl that didn't really look like J but looked similar but way too tall & oddly dressed ( for the sheer fact I couldn't imagine J wearing those clothes really. I decided to hold back and see if she wandered back my way. Then finally J actually appeared and I recognized her right away. I was glad for some odd reason that the other girl had not been her and I promptly blathered away about how happy I was to have caught her, as well as having sense enough to come back to the right terminal!  We hugged happily and began our journey onward to Tokyo. First stop would be Taito-ku, where Toco Heritage Hostel awaited us.

Incidentally J was tickled pink after navigating her trolley by insistence of the escalator helper lady. She was afraid at first and was trying to remove her baggage to get on the escalator, but the helper lady slid the trolley right onto the escalator. Realizing it's ingenious design, J was in sheer delight! I thought it was rather smart too and wondered why it wasn't something that spread about? Like escalators for shopping carts in Korea. Oh well! Till next time!

First day of Japan trip

4/19/10 (Monday in the USA, Tuesday in Japan)
Around 10 hours and so many miles, till Japan. Today started rather early. I woke at 5am right to the sound of my dog clock, woofing “She’ll be coming around the mountain.” I was really tired and slept rather well considering normally I’d be too excited to even think about sleeping. Mainly it was the sheer fact that I haven’t been able to sleep for about 3-4 days due to a low hum of giddiness. It didn’t get me to pack any sooner unfortunately but lucky for me I packed relatively fast this time. I had a few indecisive moments where I couldn’t decide what to leave behind and take. I had to toss out some shirts and pjs, but everything fit nicely into my small roller. I even went through one repack to really get it jammed in there. I do recommend vacuum bags that don’t require a vacuum. You simply roll and squeeze out the air. Pretty nice and useful.  I even have a minor space for souvenirs as well.
I got to the airport in no time, but I think it’s best to make sure you are their earlier than you think you need to be, because I had a small snafu that wasn’t even my fault. Computer error. I almost choked because I felt like the swat was going to pop out and shake me down for all I was worth! Anyways it was fairly smooth after that besides the horrors of LAX which was huge to say the least. Nothing is simply placed, even getting to international terminal is by bus and confusing to find the bus stop. Anyways I met a wonderful lady from Singapore and we glommed onto each other till we were able to get to the International terminal.  It was consoling to find someone who was sympathetic to the cause of being lost in a strange place ( yes LAX is a strange place) and finding it easier to get lost together than alone.
On the bus, an elderly lady that looked almost like my grandmother came on toting gratuitous luggage. She decided not to sit and fielded her large unwieldy bags, unfortunately the bus stopped hard and she tumbled into my lap. I was standing and leaning against the luggage rack. I caught her luckily. Is that fate or what? It made me teary. I miss my grandma. I’m glad I caught her. I felt it was definitely an act of god that I happen to be right there to cushion her fall. Seriously I wanted to hug her because she looked a lot like my grandmother.
Anyways, much later I ended up at my terminal. I got to board nearly first after first class. I chose the two seater in the back online and I’m considering changing my seat if possible. Might not be at this point, but I’m hopeful.  Also my seatmate never showed up, so I had two whole back seats to myself! Can you believe it? I kept seeing really old grouchy guys heading my way and was sure they would sit down next to me, but nope I lucked out! No offense to grouchy looking old guys.  It was one of those things where you try not to be hopeful that you’ll be on your own, in case you jinx yourself! I didn’t stop looking for my seatmate till we had started moving already. It is slightly loud in the back due to ‘engine’ but I took absolutely no notice due to the awesome entertainment system, with latest movies (Asian and Korean), games, news paper, music, etc. A very awesome service. It also offers Korean audio language course! How awesome is that? My first show was “Teddy Bear’s Smile,” a Korean TV show.  Looks good! Probably gonna watch princess and the frog too!  Also a lot of space! I must have had a much older plane when I went to Korea or something. I had to fold myself into living origami to fit into the seat. I hope I get lucky on the way back! I mean just the plane alone and the awesome on board personal screens are enough to make me ecstatic and the seats were heaven! The whole seat reclined! I mean the whole thing, not just the back. And there were cup holders in the tray tables, in case you didn’t want to bring the whole tray out!
My stewardess was so nice and strong as well. She lived some rather large roller bags that really seem they should have been left on ground and ticketed as going under the plane, carry on or not. Anyways, I had dinner or lunch in rather short order right after some peanuts and drinks. I got to eat bibimbop (veggies, meat, with rice to pop in). As well as slightly sweet and spicy pickles. There was also a tube of hot paste, which wasn’t too hot and sesame oil. They also coupled it with hot seaweed soup, which I loooove. And also some fruit for dessert. It was delicious. I got asked twice if I knew how to eat bibimbop. I wonder if Americans tend to go for the salmon or non-ethnic foods. I appreciated their kindness in making sure I didn’t weird myself out if I weren’t familiar with the food. I also got lucky on that because I thought there was onion but it was really white radish. Lucky I tasted it and found out. Ha-ha. I keep saying ‘lucky.’ Unfortunately I don’t think I’m much of a writer, so if I put ‘anyways’ or ‘lucky’ too much, I hope you will understand my newbiness.
Anyways, that’s all for now. I’m going to sprawl across my two seats and enjoy some movies.

Later the same day around 7:30PM
I am pooped. I ran around in the rain, doubling back, trying to find my way to the hotel. I’m thinking they need a photo tour or something on their website. Lucky the information box had info on my hotel. The room was small but heaven sent and there are tons of shelves all over the place in the room. Glad for that. I’m not going to be happy sharing a shower or bathrooms, but I’ll survive I guess. Reminds me of being at camp.  I also got my Ghibli tickets WOOT! I just put in the L number. Then you put in your name and a phone number. A Japanese gentleman wanted to use the machine, so finally he stepped in to help me with the machine. I got as far as the name. He turned me into Mary. Heh. But whatever, I’m going to GHIBLI! Tomorrow I’m going to try to go to Takarazuka at the crack of dawn. Well to get the tickets anyways. Well gonna go see if I need to go buy soap. Already dropped a wad of cash on an umbrella I won’t use at home.
